Laboratory Accreditation Manager
Susan Megee joined the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) as the laboratory accreditation manager after eight years as the forensic project manager for equine drug testing at the Pennsylvania Equine Toxicology and Research Laboratory (PETRL) at the University of Pennsylvania.
As the laboratory accreditation manager at HIWU, Megee works with the Science team to optimize processes and procedures for uniformity and harmonization of laboratory testing for HISA’s Anti-Doping and Medication Control Program. She collaborates with the drug testing laboratories to maintain and augment performance requirements as required by HISA’s Equine Analytical Laboratory Accreditation standards and serves as a resource for HIWU team members for the workflow operations used for sample analysis in a drug testing laboratory.
In her previous position, Megee collaborated with senior analytical chemists, management, and quality assurance to launch a HIWU state program. In addition to implementing the HIWU drug testing for Thoroughbred racing at PETRL, she oversaw testing requirements for the three Standardbred tracks in Pennsylvania. Her career has encompassed years in laboratory management, including positions with the Department of Defense, U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense, and University of Pennsylvania, Center for Germ Cell Research and Animal Transgenics. She is an avid equine enthusiast and has her own pleasure horses.
Megee graduated from the University of Delaware, where she double majored in in pre-veterinary medicine with a concentration in animal science, as well as agronomic plant science. She also minored in biology. Her graduate work includes studies in histology, histopathology, and biochemistry.
