Investigative Analyst
EJ Lauter joined the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) in July 2023 as an investigative analyst. Prior to HIWU, Lauter was an intern with the Readiness, Operations, Special Event Security (ROSES) department at Churchill Downs Racetrack and a research assistant in the University of Louisville Criminal Justice and Sociology Departments.
As an investigative analyst at HIWU, Lauter analyzes and compiles data and information to aid in the activities of the investigators and investigations staff. In their prior work at Churchill Downs, they collaborated with federal agencies to facilitate the planning of and infrastructure review for the 149th Kentucky Derby. They also updated safety plans and policies, analyzed incident reports to identify safety and department goals, and created training for security staff.
While at the University of Louisville, Lauter assisted with in-person data collection and entry for faculty and Ph.D. student research projects. They completed individual research projects, one that resulted in a presentation at the 2020 European Society of Criminology’s annual conference entitled “Education and Animal-based Prison Programming in the United States: A Comparative Analysis and Examination of International Potential.”
Lauter has an Associate of Arts degree in social and behavioral sciences from Santa Rosa Junior College as well as both their Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in criminal justice from the University of Louisville.
