In his most recent position, Dr. Anthony William Butch was the CLIA-accredited Laboratory Director at the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory, where he was responsible for COVID-19 testing for professional sports.
He also was Professor and Chief of Clinical Chemistry in the Department of Pathology, and Director of the Olympic Analytical Laboratory (OAL) at the UCLA Health Center. The OAL analyzed ~60 000 samples a year for more than 300 prohibited doping agents. Dr. Butch was also the Medical Director for the Drug Education and Testing Program in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at UCLA.
Dr. Butch has served as the Secretary for the World Association of Anti-Doping Scientists and as a consultant to the National Football League’s Anabolic Steroid Advisory Committee, the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports, and the National Center for Drug Free Sport. Dr. Butch has served on numerous committees such as World Anti-Doping Agency working groups and the NCAA Drug Testing and Drug Education Task Force. He was also appointed as an independent expert to an arbitration panel in two Olympic athlete doping cases heard before the International Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Dr. Butch has been recognized numerous times as an outstanding teacher, tutor, mentor, and speaker, as well as for his outstanding contributions to clinical chemistry. He completed his Ph.D. with a major in immunology, followed by a Postdoctoral Clinical Chemistry Fellow and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Washington University. He was on the board of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (now ADLM) and was the president of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. He has received support or grants for >40 research projects and has been an author on more than 100 peer-reviewed research articles, case reports and book chapters. Dr. Butch has provided expert testimony on behalf of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, the US Department of Defense, the NFL, and the California State Athletic Commission.
